The Internet is certainly not to blame for any editor (or perhaps editorial assistant) misusing the Search and Replace feature of Word. Many do not even know the appropriate uses of the hyphen versus the en dash and em dash. When I got back a manuscript some years ago, and found that there were no en or em dashes, but only "hyphens" used, albeit sometimes two in a row, I marked up the proof accordingly. I also wrote a note saying that all dashes (as opposed to hyphens) should be em dashes, etc. And also listed the instances when the en dash should be employed. I can only attribute stupidity to what I found in the next proof: only em dashes throughout the manuscript! Can you imagine seeing something like one---half, etc.

The Search and Replace feature can be very useful, but one must first ascertain whether there will be a problem to doing a total global replacement. If so, it is still useful to go from each instance it item is found to consider whether it should be replaced. It is in fact the only tool at your disposal, short of reading the entire thing over again.
